Zamora es la Samura musulmana durante ese período, hasta que, reconquistada por Fernando I de León (1010-1065), pasa a ser reconstruida y repoblada. Su nombre actual procede de esta época. El escudo de la ciudad incluye a Viriato portando la enseña de la ciudad y también incluye el río Guadiana y las torres del puente romano de Mérida, tomada a los musulmanes por mesnadas zamoranas en 1227 al mando del Rey de Castilla Alfonso IX.
