Avilés es una ciudad comprometida con el arte, la cultura, la música y toda clase de eventos y manifestaciones culturales, para lo cual está especialmente bien dotada con su Centro Municipal de Arte y Exposiciones y con su Centro Cultural Internacional Oscar Niemeyer, que es un icono de la Asturias de nuestros días. Esta bonita ciudad tiene un patrimonio arquitectónico extraordinario y un parque - jardín de 8 hectáreas, el más grande de cualquier ciudad del Principado. También tiene varios palacios, el más antiguo de los cuales data del siglo XIV, y una bonita iglesia, denominada de San Nicolás de Bari.
