Saint-Étienne es
prefectura del Departamento del Loira en la Región Ródano-Alpes, y tiene un
pasado minero con la cuenca hullera de Stéphanie. Es una ciudad importante,
aunque por su proximidad a Lyon queda muy ninguneada en los medios de
comunicación francesa, que solo ponen el foco en ella cuando hay acontecimiento
nacionales. La ciudad se llamaba Furanum en época romana y Furania en la Edad
Media. La ciudad tenía fábrica de armas, y por eso en la Revolución Francesa se
llamó Armeville o Comunne d’Armes. Desde el siglo XV fue una ciudad donde se
fabricaban armas blancas y armas de fuego desde las guerras italianas de Francisco
I. Durante la revolución industrial, la ciudad se convirtió en lugar de
industria metalúrgica pesada y extracción de carbón. La ciudad tuvo la primera
línea de tren de Europa para el transporte de carbón. Entre 1830 y 1832 el tren
comenzó a transportar viajeros a Lyon. El 25 de Mayo de 1944 hubo bombardeos
americanos para destruir las fábricas de armas utilizadas por los nazis, y hubo
1.000 muertos a causa del dicho bombardeo. Mucha industria local colapsó a
partir de 1970 la ciudad perdió casi 50.000 habitantes, pasando de 225.000 a
180.000.
Saint-Étienne is prefecture
of the Loire department in the Rhône-Alpes Region, and it has a mining past
with the Stéphanie coalfield. It is an important city, although its proximity
to Lyon makes it very ignored by the French media, they just put the focus on
it when national events take place in the city. The city was called Furanum in
Roman times and Furania in the Middle Ages. The city had weapons factory, so
the French Revolution called the city Armeville or Comunne d'Armes. Since the
fifteenth century it was a city where knives and firearms were manufactured for
the Italian wars of Francis I. During the industrial revolution, the city
became a place of heavy metal industry and coal mining. The city had the first
railway line in Europe to transport coal. Between 1830 and 1832 the train began
to carry passengers to Lyon. On May 25, 1944 there were American bombings to
destroy arms factories used by the Nazis, and there were 1,000 deaths from this
bombings. Many local industry collapsed after 1970 and the city lost nearly
50,000 inhabitants, from 225000 to 180000.
