Oviedo tuvo su fundación en el siglo VIII, y tenemos constancia de su existencia antes del año 812, pues Alfonso II El Casto menciona la ciudad como capital de su reino (Reino de Asturias) en su testamento, que se guarda en la catedral. El Reino tuvo su origen en Covadonga, pues fue allí donde comenzó la resistencia contra el invasor musulmán, quienes llegaron en 711 y para 718 habían ocupado toda la Penísula Ibérica salvo algunos reductos en el Norte. Ese fue el principio de La Reconquista, el período histórico que comienza en la Alta Edad Media con Don Pelayo hacia 718, y culmina al comienzo de la Edad Moderna con la toma de Granada el 2 de Enero de 1492 por los Reyes Católicos, casi 8 siglos de empresa común de los hispanogodos que forja la esencia de nuestra nación, la cual fue romanizada tras la caída de los cartagineses en el siglo II A.C. y convertida al cristianismo durante el período romano y tras la oficialización de la religión en el Imperio por Constantino el Grande el año 313 mediante el Edicto de Milán. Roma con el latín, del que procede la lengua romance (castellano o español) y la religión cristiana conforman la esencia de nuestro ser como pueblo o nación. Esa defensa de las costumbres, religión y lengua propias movieron a la población peninsular a oponerse al invasor y España es, hasta hoy, el único país del mundo donde una vez tomado el poder por los musulmanes, se consigue recuperar por completo, expulsando al invasor y no aceptando ni su lengua, ni su religión, ni sus costumbres. Por ello, se puede afirmar sin temor a equivocarnos que si las cruzadas comenzaron en Europa a partir de finales del siglo XI, en España la lucha comenzó casi cuatro siglos antes.

Therefore, it can be said without fear of contradiction that if the Crusades began in Europe from the late eleventh century in Spain the fight began almost four centuries before.
