León tiene su origen en los campamentos militares romanos de las legiones VI Victrix del año 29 a.c. y VII Gemina del año 74. Tras la caída de la Hispania visigoda en manos musulmanas, comienza a recobrar su importancia al heredar la capitalidad del Reino de Asturias a partir de 910 como Reino de León. En 1188 tuvieron lugar en el Reino de León las primeras Cortes de la Historia de Europa, considerándose este momento el origen del parlamentarismo. Es uno de los reinos importantes de la Reconquista, y a partir de 1230 su unión con el Reino de Castilla origina una de las grandes entidades políticas que contribuye a culminar el período de la Reconquista y a configurar la España moderna tras su unión con el Reino de Aragón por el matrimonio de los Reyes Católicos. León fue una de las primeras ciudades de España en sublevarse contra los franceses en la Guerra de la Independencia. Ha tenido importancia en la España moderna durante la época de la minería del carbón y como nudo ferroviario del noroeste de España. Su conjunto catedralicio es uno de los más hermosos de toda la Cristiandad.

After the fall of Visigothic Hispania in Muslim hands, the city begins to regain its importance to inherit the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias from 910 as the Kingdom of Leon.
