La fundación de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria data de 1478, año del comienzo de la conquista del archipiélago. La ciudad se convirtíó pronto en la capital de las islas, y el propio Colón pasó por ella en 1492 con motivo de cambiar el timón de La Pinta, y el trapo de La Niña, cambiando las velas triangulares por unas cuadradas, y convirtiendo a esta nave en la más veloz de su época, debido a ese cambio. Colón a continuación pasó por la isla de La Gomera de donde partió el 5 de Septiembre para su periplo oceánico, descubriendo el Nuevo Mundo el 12 de Octubre. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria se convirtió en la capital de las islas al acoger la Capitanía General. En el siglo siguiente sufrió ataques piratas, y los famosos Hawkins y Drake pagaron con su vida su atrevimiento en su intento de saqueo de 1595. Una flota holandesa de 74 naves y 8.000 hombres atacó la capital en 1599, pero no pudieron consolidad su conquista y en los siguientes días tuvieron que abandonarla, derrotados por los isleños. Las Islas Canarias eran el punto de paso y lanzadera, a la ida y a la vuelta, en el viaje a las Indias Occidentales, y siempre despertaron las envidias y la codicia de las otras potencias marítimas. Hoy es el turismo la gran riqueza de las islas, y Las Palmas de Gran Canaria es la novena conurbación de España con 600.000 habitantes.
