Arlés es una subprefectura del departamento
Bouches-du-Rhône en la región Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, en Francia. Arlés es
una de las Villes et Pays d’Art et d’Histoire de Francia, distintivo del
Ministerio de Cultura francés para aquellas ciudades y regiones que se
comprometen con la revalorización y promoción de su patrimonio histórico,
arquitectónico, cultural, etc. El río Ródano se convierte en dos brazos en
Arlés, formando el Delta de la Camarga, zona conocida por su población de
flamencos. Arlés fue primero colonia griega y luego romana, desde el año 123
a.c. Arlés terminó siendo zona de retiro
de los veteranos de la VI legión Ferrata, con campamento en esta ciudad. Arlés
conserva un magnífico anfiteatro romano o arena. En tiempos del emperador
Flavio Honorio fue prefectura de la Galia que incluía también a Hispania. Arlés
fue muy importante en los siglos IV y V dentro del imperio romano de Occidente,
y Constantino III la convirtió en su capital en 408. Durante el siglo IX sufrió
ataques musulmanes por lo que su ciudad amurallada adquirió importancia
militar. Durante el siglo XIX la llegada del ferrocarril hizo perder
importancia a la vía fluvial y Arlés se convirtió en una ciudad muy tranquila.
Tan tranquila que Vincent Van Gogh llegó a ella en 1888 y produjo más de 300
cuadros durante su estancia. Por sus disputas con Gauguin, Van Gogh fue
recluido en 1889 en el asilo de Sant-Rémy-de-Provence. La economía de Arlés se
basa en la agricultura, textiles, plantaciones de arroz y salinas.
