Charleville-Mézières, prefecture of the Department of French Ardennes, in the Champagne-Ardenne region. The city owes its origin to the fords on the Meuse. Currently it is not so important, but it has in the near capitals like Paris or Brussels. This city, of Roman origin, owes its splendor to the Gonzaga family, mainly Charles, first Duke of Gonzaga. This family also owned the Duchies of Mantua and Montferrat, which eventually would lead to the disappearance of the dynasty, as European tensions of the War of Spanish Succession 1701-1713, resolved with the Treaty of Utrecht, affected several countries and many small territories that were attached to larger national units, with the disappearance of the influence of many of these small territories of the border. However, the Gonzaga-Nevers family was very important in Charleville over several centuries, defining its architecture, its economy and its historic shape. The Ducal Square of Charleville with its trapezoidal cover expresses the model known as the Place des Vosges in Paris, for which it serves as a direct antecedent, and another Charleville building is a model for the Hôtel de Ville in the French capital. Current Charleville born in 1606 at the hands of Charles I of Gonzaga-Nevers and its architect Clément Métezeau, whose brother was the architect of the Place des Vosges in Paris, literally copying the Charleville’s. This city is born with Renaissance values of Italian origin, we should not forget that the ruling house of Gonzaga-Nevers were also Dukes of Mantua and Montferrat. The name Charleville-Mezieres was created in 1966 by merging into a single city of several existing main centers: Charleville, Ethion, Mézières, Mohon and Montcy-Saint-Pierre.
